LEJOG
This time honoured challenge has been walked, run, uni-cycled, skateboarded and even raced on wheelchairs. But we’ve gone for the classic road cycle. The actual route you follow varies hugely depending on the length of time you have and the degree of countryside you’d like to see. But on average the route takes a good cyclist between 10-14 days to complete.
For us this trip is all about getting from A to B as quickly as possible and so we are sadly going to have to stick to the A-roads. Driving these roads is usually bad enough but we have to cycle while cars hurtle past at 80 mph. But by taking this route then it should cut the overall distance to around 880 miles.
As we all work then we (stupidly) decided that we did not want to take more than a week off work to do the whole trip and get back. That effectively means that we only have 8 days to ride the course and then the final day to wind our way back from the North of Scotland.
For the mathematically challenged, that means that we are going to be covering around 110 miles a day!!! Just think for a moment how far that is… even in a car that’s going to take 2-3 hours unless you live in London where it takes a week. We are estimating that it will take around 10 hours a day of cycling. The plan is to get up around 6 and cycle for 2 hours before breakfast. After food we shall go for another 3 hours and have lunch followed by another 3 hours and a short prayer that we’ve arrived at the days destination, if not then it’s back on the bike again. After a couple of beers and a good nights sleep then we’ll do it again, and again, and again, for 8 days.
None of us have any illusions that this isn’t going to be a ridiculously tough challenge. But we count ourselves incredibly fortunate to be able to take on such a mammoth task. For many people this would be an impossibility due to injuries or disabilities and it is for those people that we are doing this ride. All the pain that we are going through pales into insignificance compared with what they go through every day. Please take a look at the charities we are doing this for and give generously. Every penny you donate will be extremely gratefully received.
Thanks for your help,
Tom
